Gadget insurance needed

Last month, I signed up for Barclays Tec pack @£7 per month. 3 mobiles and a iPad at home that I wanted to cover.

I then discovered, if iPhone or iPad are over 2 yrs old, they won't cover them (they are). Also limit value is £750. Have to register loads of details for each item you want insured  I was then deciding what my options were

Then 18yr old daughter stolen iphone5 in a nightclub. We have a police claim number, nightclub not willing to look at CCTV, don't blame them. Only option now is to claim on house insurance.....excess £250:eek: I will have to sort that

However, I still want to get all our mobiles and IPad insured. Any suggestions / recommendations please :D

  • You can pick up a contract free iphone 5 for £400 and so claiming on your home insurance with a £250 xs doesnt look economical. Likewise, depending on how far into your contract you are then it may be cheaper to sign up new again buying out of your existing contract.

The problem with gadget insurance, other than it generally be rubbish, is that it is normally indemnity rather than new for old and so you'd be looking at £300 settlement and then the excess coming off of it.

For single electrical items I am a strong supporter of self insurance and just use the home insurance when a bag is stolen with multiple items in it to make it an economical claim.
