Isle of Wight winter breaks

There are a few IoW break offers around recently, which also includes Ferry Crossing in price. As do not know anything about the Isle then can anyone suggest a really nice place to consider for 3 nights mid-Jan without 'breaking the bank' please ? Thanks

Depends what you want and whether you're taking a car. We visit monthly as the kids now live there, and get fantastic value in Ryde, in a slightly quirky, tatty but historic hotel on the High Street called Yelf's. http://www.yelfshotel.com/

We check the rate on booking.com, then phone 'em direct and negotiate a price-match- so nearer £60 a night than the advertised £75-80 'guide-price for a double with breakfast (which is excellent, and mega-generous; anything from a full English to porridge and poached fish).

And their evening meals at £10 for two courses are also so big and competent that you won't need lunch!

The Island has lots of prettier spots and Ryde's a bit 'end of the pier English' out of season, but in January you'll be better off in a town (although the IOW weather tends to be better than further north)

As regards travel, the hotel can book for you but we find that in Winter, they can't beat the discounted rack rate (search these forum or Google for discount codes). In summer their preferential travel rates are worthwhile, but travel in Jan is fairly cheap anyway.

Assuming you have a car, there are dozens of attarctions from English Heritage ones and Vineyards to Dinosaur themed stuff and kids zoos, all well-covered in the guide you'll pick up on the ferry or in the Islander freesheet. And even if you don't have a car, public transport from Ryde is excellent.

But frankly anywhere you go to will be great; as you can see, we're fans; especially as (according to our kids affectionately cynical line) when you cross the Solent, you 'set your watch back...50 years!

After last night's storms I hope the IoW is still in one piece!
