Renting in Manchester City Centre

Options
Hi

My boyfriend and I are looking to rent an apartment in Manchester City Centre and I was wondering if anybody on here has done that or actually lets them out so I can get a bit of advice. We can only afford £600 a month but we do need two bedrooms as we have so much stuff and a pc etc.

Basically if anybody could give me an idea of how much we should be paying a month, any agencies/landlord to speak to or avoid and how much we should be paying for fees.

We have seen a few apartments but we don't really seem to be getting much for our money but maybe that's just because it's Manchester City Centre and everything costs more!!

I'd appreciate any comments/advice.

Thanks

Hayley

I heard if you look just over the border in Salford (still only 5 minutes walk from Deansgate) it gets a bit cheaper. But I think centre of the centre will cost more than £600 for a 2 bedder. Depends if you need to be right in the centre.

What you're looking for will cost more like £800. The poster above is absolutely right, I lived in a two bed house with garden that was just over the main road from Salford Central station, which as you'll probably know is only about three minutes walk from Kendals department store and ten into the Arndale. It was £500pm.

My old postcode was M3 6BH (I think!) if you want to look it up on Multimap or whatever. You could then ask agents if they have places in that area, most people on the street were tenants so there should be properties available and it was a nice place to live.
Aiming to pay off mortgage by my 30th birthday... £39438 to go!

I'm really wary of Salford, it has such a bad reputation. I really want somewhere that I'll feel safe walking around on my own or at night.

We did see an apartment at City Gate, about 5 mins from Deansgate Locks, that was up at £650 for two bedrooms, two bathrooms, on the 6th floor, he said he could probably get it down to £600 though. I'm going to find out what the fees and everything are with him and see if it's too good to be true or not.

Try vitalspace.co.uk, they're nice agents and have a few flats in castlefield for just over £600.

I thought Manchester was awash with empty new-build flats? If they're offering £600 w/o you forcing the issue then you should have further room to move ..... haggle on that rent!

If you're renting for longer than the standard AST period mention it: you should get a further discount.

Judging by Gumtree and Rightmove there's plenty to choose from.

Finally, make sure the LL has approval from their mortgage company to let the property out.

    Good luck.

Some areas in Salford are rough. However, in the last few years, many have undergone regeneration and are really quite pleasant. Salford Quays, a bit further out of the city, is not inner city Salford at all and is awash with upmarket apartments.

Even areas that used to be rough like Ordsall have a few nice aparment blocks that has security gates and own parking, such a Lamba Court and Fusion. Those are a short walk from Deansgate.

You may also want to consider Hulme. Again, it had a bad reputation in the past but there are now plenty of nice upmarket apartments.

I live in manchester and know the area well. Time was when Salford and Manchester really were two separate cities. Now what we have is a situation whereby the lower border between Salford and Manchester has become blurred. Effectively, Manchester city centre has expanded and absorbed a chunk of salford.

There really is no need to be worried about Salford. Sure it has its grotspots, mainly parts of Ordsall,Lower keasal and other areas around Frederick rod but then so does Manchester. In fact,in my experience,it doesnt matter too much where you live, there is scum and crime everywhere. Truth is,the rental and buy to let market has given low life and dolehoppers access to areas and properties which they previouslt could not afford. You could quite easily have someone flogging their guts out to pay rent/mortgage whilst next door ,you have a state funded dole hopper enjoying the same benefits of living in a "nice" area but paying nothing or very little for it!
