Smart meter - does it limit my supplier choice?

I'm signed up to a firstutility dual fuel plan until March 2014, but it has £60 early redemption fees. I know exit fees are a pain, but it was a good deal at the time, fixed for two winters.
I have now started looking at a long fix deal, factoring in the early leaving fees and offsetting it against any cash back.
I was just wondering if having a smart meter affects my supplier choice. Two weeks ago, firstutility, at their insistence, got Siemens to replace my electricity meter with a Smartmeter. The new meter is up and running and I can see my readings online via the firstutility website as expected. I am struggling to find information on which other suppliers are set up to accept readings from these new meters. I believe the government wanted all households switched by 2020. By switching the meter now, have they in effect tied me to into staying with firstutility? Anyone else switched supplier whilst on a smartmeter?

  • AFAAIA it won't limit your options because other suppliers will simply treat it as a 'dumb' meter. Whether F:U (love those initials) will ask for a payment for the installation of the meter I really couldn't say so you will have to ask them.
  • " smart switching "is not yet available with any suppliers so far as I know. First Utility use the same smart electric as BG, I ve seen plenty of them who ve moved to BG and the occupiers say its lost the smart functionality I have just switched from BG to Npower and have not been asked for a meter installation fee
