The coolant had to go somewhere and the smell is hot coolant on hot metal it stinks.

Advise on a coolant pressure test & hydrocarbon sniff test.

Ask your local garage to do this as he will tell you if you have a leak outside on inside your engine.

As for a simple guide the handbook with the car is the first place to read if you don't have one the Haynes manual tells all.

Basic checks could save you hundreds of £££.
