Hi
my friend has just bought a second hand car but were not sure how to get road tax...heres the situation...
hes buying it tomorrow so will have v5 tomorrow aswell as the mot certificate ...the current road tax expires in a few days time.
he will get the car insured tomorrow...how does he get a new road tax (the easiest and quickest route)?
the issue is the car will still be registered in the current owners name? does this cause issues? if he does it on line will the road tax not go to the wrong address?
he wants the road tax asap...
whats the best way? go to post office? but he hasn't got insurance certificate yet? plus the v5 will be in wrong name?
thanks

The insureance will email it to him. Just print it off and take it along with the other documents to the post office. Simple.0

The current owner of the car will send off the V5 with your friends details on it to allow transfer of keeper details to be updated by DVLA.
Your friend should be given a tear off slip by the seller which he/she can then take to a post office, along with the insurance certificate for the car and also the current MOT if it has one. They should be able to issue a new road fund licence for it. If it is taxed to the end of the month it might be best to wait to the last few days of the month to ensure the new tax disc starts from 1st November."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

ok, so we don't have to wait for the new V5, that's good...so really its the insurance document we need and this can be emailed and printed,,,will post office accept printed copy?
will he need the road tax letter/reminder to take with him to post office?0 -

if you have possession of the road tax reminder that will make the process a little bit easier, but if not just the documents mentioned above will suffice. And a printed copy of the insurance certificate will be fine. The days of watermarked insurance certificates are long gone now."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

The Post Office will accept a printed copy of your insurance.
The part of the V5C you need is the green part 10. Also marked as V5C/2
Just fill in form V10 (Application for the tax disc) asking for the disc to start on the 1st of November.0 -
You don't even need to fill in a form. i just walk in to the post office, give them the MOT, insurance, green slip / V5 and ask for 6 or 12months tax and then unwillingly hand over my money0

Couldnt you just do it online?0

nope not unless they get the V5 back in time. The car will still be registered in the last owners name so the tax will get delivered to them.0
