Getting a download speed greater than my "up to" speed

I'm an certainly not in the complaining camp about this!
I decided to run a speed test this evening (at speedtest.net) and whilst I expect the site to report slightly lower than the actual speed being delivered for all sorts of sensible reasons I was surprised when it reported I've got a >100 Mbps download speed from my Superfast BT Infinity which I thought could only deliver up to 76Mbps!
I tried the test a few more times and about 50% of the tests were >100Mbps.
Can you ever take these results with more than a pinch on salt given that there are so many variables?

take with a pinch of salt, they are an indicator of speed, some are flawed, try a different tester!!

If I try speedtest.net I get reasonable figures, if I try broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk then I get huge numbers. All these sites seem a bit flaky, though I suspect that using lots of them multiple times could work better.0

With BT? Then use http://speedtest.btwholesale.com
(also useful if you want to know the profile of any BT number)If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
Are you running an Internet Security package?
Some time ago the Kaspersky firewall was known to do some form of buffering which completely threw the less-intelligent speed checkers (like speedtest.net, which reports the highest figure encountered).
Me, I found the fastest my 10 Mbps cable line ran was 43 Mbps!0
