Well and truly locked in to British Gas

I recently tried to change supplier to First Utility, and was told by the website there was no electricity supply to the property.

I contacted BG who supplied me with a MPAN number which I forwarded to First Utily and received this reply.

"
I can confirm that the MPAN 11*********** is related to an energy supply that is registered as 'de energized'.

Only your current provider can change this as they are responsible for providing the correct information. Once the meter is no longer registered as de energized, please come back to us and we will process your application again."

Not knowing what de energized meant I did a googlw search and its a mains supply but the fuse has been removed.

So is this a way of BG locking me into their company so I can't switch to another company.

Surely it means you haven't got electricity at the property?
Have you just moved in or are you trying to change supplier because you no longer want to be with BG?

If you are using electricity and are with BG ask them why it is registered as De-energised?

I have lived here for a few years, just trying to switch suppliers but if I am de energized then no other company will want to supply electricity because like you have said no electricity is coming to the property.

    I'm still confused.

You are trying to switch the supply of something that isn't in use?

If the supply is de-energised you can't(?) be using electricity?
Why would you want it moving to someone else?

There is no confusion, I am with BG and I wanted to switch my supplier to First Utility but on their web site it told me I was de-energised. I contacted BG via Email who gave me the MPAN number which I forwarded to First Utilitity, and they told me that number was de-energised and so I could not switch.

This afternoon I phoned up BG to sort it out, and even though I had been paying for electricity to them for years, she check the number on the MAPN database and it did come up as de-energised. So she put me through to another department who apologised and said it must have been an error with the database and they would sort it out sending an email to the database but it would take 2 to 3 weeks to sort it out.

But thats no good to me as I was following the advise on this site and switching to First Utilities fixed price saving me according to the comparison site £93 a year.

In 2 to 3 weeks time all the prices would have gone up and I would probably have to stay with BG because I wont get a good fixed price deal as all the quotas will be filled.

Your last post clears it up.

Your initial posts made no mention of the fact the meter was showing as de-energised in error.

I'm fairly certain there isn't a great BG conspiracy to try and personally stiff you.

If you believe you have been financially impacted by this speak to BG complaints and be specific about what it is you are trying to achieve.
