problem with council house renting

Options
week later we were told that it was in such a bad state that the council were obliged to decorate it but that meant a wait of 3 to 4 weeks. Fine we accepted that. On the 1st of October I asked how the decorating was going and was told it wasn't being decorated after all but that they were waiting for a sealed glass window unit to be installed and that it would be done by the 18th October so we called in to see them today 21st October to be told that it needs decorating so I told her that we were told it wasn't being decorated and the guy who originally told us it wasn't being done shouted across the room that he never said that, anyway then she changed her mind and said it wasn't being decorated again but didn't know what works needed to be carried out and the guy who would know is on holiday till god knows when.
My problem is I have given notice on my apartment to leave on the 5th November thinking I would be out well before then but think I can extend it another month anyway. My question is the situation is obviously unfair and its clear the council aren't capable of communicating with each other so is there anything I can do to get them to sort this out as I fear this could go on for months, I am having to bite my lip as we haven't got the keys yet, are the council allowed to mess us about for all this time or have they got an obligation to sort this property out in a reasonable timescale?
HELP PLEASE!!!!

Can understand how very frustrating it is for you but not much you can do really.

Just keep smiling, extend your stay at your present accommodation and ring them every few days to keep them on their toes.

Regardless of the 'a council house and what a lucky person you are' comment inefficiency in any public or private 'company' is a pain in the ***!

angelic for your information my wife has been left crippled due to the poor care she received in an nhs hospital she was discharged with a large open wound and was unable to move for 12 months after going into septic shock from blood poisoning due to a failed bowel op. I had to nurse her back to health and had to close my one man business down which I had successfully run for 36 years we then lost our home of 38 years and were both made bankrupt and had to find rented accommodation which was very very difficult in our circumstances so please forgive me if I don't paraphrase my ravings as I thought that a well educated person such as yourself would be capable of dechiphering it, Obviously it is annoying you so I suggest you ignore it , thank you

Sorry to hear about your troubles. What you need to understand however is that it is never worth responding in anger to horrible anti social housing trolls like AngelicDevil. Some people regrettably, led by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and his press cheerleaders, have the opinion that anyone with problems, or needed housing support of any sort, are responsible for their own predicament and scroungers. Your initial response was much better phrased. Good luck, and I hope the new house is ready for you soon.

You can respond anyway you like AngelicDevil and I will not reply, so save your breath.

The council now have a legal responsibility to check out all the properties they rent out !
Tenants could live in a property for twenty years without much being done to the place but as soon as a new tenancy /tenant wants to move in they have to check and even rewire the whole place !
Same with all the gas central heating , windows. Etc.
Waiting to get rehoused can be a nightmare
