Hi there i apologise if this question has already been asked but i wondered if anyone could give me some advice.
I split up from my husband and we sold our house in august we got 34k profit,I gave 6k to him straight away. We had joint debts which i payed off that amounted to around 4k. I am renting privately now which is 500 a month,i have also had to buy everything from settees, wardrobes, mattresses, drawers, dryer, cooker, etc all the things me and my son needed as we had nothing.
I have around 16k left i have receipts for everything more or less i have not just squandered the money its been spent on things we need plus i owed few people money etc, also my husband wants another 4k!
What i want to know is in a month or so i want to apply for housing benefit can anyone see a reason i wouldnt get this? the only other income i have is carers allowance as i am a carer for my mother, thanks in advance for reading
xx

No BUT they will ask how much savings you have and as its close to the limit they may ask you to prove your below the limit,Are you planning on claiming any other benefits ?0 -
hi thanks for youre reply,
the only savings i have is the 16k well it will be less than that when i come to claim and that is what i am living off i forgot to say i get child tax credits aswell but nothing else at all and wont be planning on climing anything else either0 -
You'd do better on the Benefits forum as this is not really a housing question.
But seems to me you don't need HB as you have plenty of money.0 -
Do you have a financial setlement organised as part of your divorce?
It would be quite reasonable for you to agree to pay off joint debts and then split the remaining equity somethinglike 50:40, 60:40 perhaps.
Why did you have to buy everything new; what happened to all the furniture and white goods in the old house? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks for the reply,
we are not divorced yet and we had a mutual agreement on how the money would be split and because i will be bringing up our son and because he committed adultery i think i deserved a bit more of the money.
I had to buy everything new as my husband took the setees and the bed the cooker was left in the house the wardobes etc were fitted in the house so had to buy those like i say ive brought things we needed and we havent really had any luxuries apart from maybe a few items of clothing.0 -
im not expecting the taxpayer to pay it i will be living off this 16k and as the rent is 500 a month plus food, gas, electric, etc it wont last that long im not saying i want to caim it now but maybe in a couple of months or so i woulndt be frittering it away me and my son will be living off it. thanks for your reply0

£500 for rent and if you assume another £500 for food, bills etc then council tax that will be due at say £1000 per year then its only going to last just over a year, the limit is 16k for a reason, while i agree you people shouldnt spend it to get below the limit,i really dont think OP is looking to "milk" the system just to get some help IF she needs it0 -
Are you currently in employment?*Assuming you're in England or Wales.0

OP is not in this situation by choice, she appears to be trying her best and just wants to know what she COULD be entitled to IF she chose to claim HB.
OP - Are you full time carer for your mother ?, did you work before you split with ex partner ?, are you planning on returning/looking for work ?0 -

thankyou that is exactly what i am not trying to do milk the system! just to know that there is help there should i need it. I have never claimed anything in my life i worked from the age of 16 to 28 i had my son then i became a carer for my mother.
Ive never signed on or anything but through no choice of my own my family has been split up and not only have me and my son had to come to terms with that and having to sell our home i have to look at any help we can get in the future isnt that what any parent would have to do? thanks for all replies0
