Best energy plan?

I moved in April and my circumstances are very different from the previous householder - my father - who was elderly and disabled and had heating on all day.
I simply took over the same companies/tariffs - British Gas for gas (cooker and boiler for me) and EON for electricity.
I am on economy 7 at present and pay quarterly (well I have for the previous quarter and will in October)

I was previously on dual fuel with British Gas and paid by DD with no issues.

I don't have any usage figures for my new flat, but my questions are:
Is there any benefit to me being on economy 7? should I run the dishwasher/washing machine overnight to get the benefit?

Is there are general energy plan/tariff/provider that people would recommend for the next year or so until I can monitor usage.

I know it can't be specific and detailed but any guidance would be welcomed. I used very little fuel in my old property but it was very fuel-efficient and I was out all day. I am at home more now, but don't use heating unless it's very cold.

The other problem I have is access to my gas meter - it's in the downstairs flat's courtyard (right outside their window) so I don't like to keep checking the reading.

Thank you
Aiming to get healthy in 2014.

    Morning Tryingagainandagain,

I can help a little bit on your electricity. :)

Economy 7 is normally best for all electric properties, who have electric heating (storage heaters), there are some exceptions to this though.

We would say you need to use about 40% of your electricity over night to make economy 7 worthwhile.

If you need any help with your tariff, let me know or have a look at the website.

    Helena:)

  • Thank you, Helena.

I think that unless I make a specific effort to do so, I am unlikely to use 40% of my electricity overnight. However I will experiment with usages of the washing machine and dishwasher and see how that goes this week.

    Thank you for your response.
