Holidaying over Christmas can be much more expensive than at another times and demand is high.

we're thinking of the same thing and currently investigating Los Angeles and Las Vegas maybe a week in each, would be our Christmas present. We have a 14 year old and he wants to go where there is a bit of life!

Well Vegas will certainly open his eyes

A 14 year old will have problems in a lot of the hotels as they are banned from the casinos themselves. Circus Circus is an exception but with little to do but walk down the Strip and look at the lights, exceptional though they are, I am not certain LV is for a 14 year old. He may also get accosted by delightful men handing out brochures offering services that you might not want him to know about at all!
