How do I manage my photos my way, not adobe's?

Hi

I have a gazillion photographs contained in about 30 different folders. Windows XP.

I need to select a subset (which I will choose manually), then shuffle these into a particular sequence to tell a story in about 100 pictures.

Is there (preferably freeware) software that lets me do this easily? I need (1) to work with (preferably scalable) thumbnails, (2) to make a subset of the ones I select; (3) sort those into my chosen sequence and then (4) permanently keep them in that sequence after I turn off the computer.

Anyone mentioning Adobe Bridge will be shot. I was under the impression that this was the whole point of it, but as far as I can see it is clunky and almost useless.

I'm in WinXP and a not especially powerful machine (Atom N270).

At the moment, I'm scaling thumbnails with Windows powertoys, going through all the original folders and Windows copying/pasting likely looking candidates into a new folder, then dragging the thumbnails of those copies into sequence and MANUALLY renaming them one by one in ascending numerical order, so that they retain the sequence after I close the window. I will have to do this lots of times over (on different sets of photos) and it is VERY slow going. There has to be an easier way!! What is it please ?

Issues 3 & 4 are Windows related. You can only sort things in certain ways using windows.

What brand of camera do you have?
If it's a Canon (or you can find someone with the Canon disks), install Digital Photo Professional (DPP). That allows you to edit and organise photos quite easily.
I used to use a combination of it and GIMP to do all my photo editing, but I use Aperture now to do it - although it's £75 (from memory), and doesn't work on Windows.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • Google Picassa should do it. You create virtual albums from your original photos, wherever they are. You can then export those (copy) them all into one place

    And its free
