Hi wonder if any of you clever people can help out a senior here with little knowledge of these things.
We have just sacked Sky so now nothing to record on, need to buy a recorder that has very similar things to Sky but that has DVD as well.
We did have a Sony one before but it's old now, need something more up to date.
So can anyone give advice on which is the best to buy?
Can afford up to £300
Thanks for any help and advice

It is finding one these days that will have an input to record from Sky.
Personally i would opt for Freesat recorder and a separate blu ray player.
Get humax 500gb freetime+ for £210 from richer sounds.
And a blu ray player from £40 upwards from same place, richer soundsMansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Do you want to record from a Satellite receiver connected to your current dish, or put a Freeview box in, and connect it up to a conventional aerial?0

As another technophobe senior, I recommend getting a Humax HDR which really is plug and play and is so simple that even my husband can operate it. It you want to play DVDs you can run a separate player in tandem with it, either something basic (and cheap) like we have or something more sophisticated.0

You've just got rid of Sky, meaning you should have 2 satellite leads to use - plug them into the back of a Humax Foxsat HDR (Freesat HD Recorder) or to have much better catch up stuff (iPlayer etc) a Humax <freetime> recorder, as suggested in the above posts.
Or, if you know that you have a working aerial, you could choose YouView.
What do you need the DVD for - playing DVDs or recording onto them? Either way, buy it separately.0 -
Thanks guys for this help, I think we will be sorted now.
We have talk talk phone and broadband package and strangely enough had a call from them this morning.
We are getting a youview box from them to install it our self but can any of you tell me why I need to have it connected to my router.
This is in another room so they say I will have to get an extension lead as they only supply 3mts.
When we had Sky connected the engineer didn't connect the phone line but did leave us the wire to do it if we wanted but we never had cause to do it.
Does this mean I wont have to connect to the router if I don't need it as with Sky.
Sorry if I sound thick I just don't understand this stuff and hubby not any better.0 -
YouView is a box that streams shows from all the UK available "Catchup" services offered by the BBC, Ch4, ITV ch5 and a few others as well as recording shows like your old Sky box.
So it's a way of accessing those websites in a single box and show them on your TV rather than sitting in front of your PC to catch up on a series.
also some content is different between BT's offering and TalkTalk's

Hi thanks for that, just had a look at that link, think I understand better now. Just one more question. which way are we better to connect to router, with the extension cable at least 5 mts required or to buy the power adapter suggested.0

The best method is to use an ethernet cable to connect... cheapest, best speed and reliability and no extra electricity used.Hi thanks for that, just had a look at that link, think I understand better now. The Powerline adapters may be simpler to connect up, though.
Do you have a working UHF roof aerial, though?. As without that the YouView PVR will be not much more use than a $ky+ box without a subscription.0 -
Hi thanks for that will use the ethernet cable then and yes got good aerial that we are watching through now since disconnected Sky box
Just got to wait for box to arrive now, hope it's easy to connect up otherwise I may be coming back for help0
