Hi everyone :) No hangover here, i started my dry January last night, so no alcohol for me until February!

I am still reading this thread, just not had time to post much. Sorry to hear about your boiler, Cathy. Do you know how much of your savings will be swallowed up by fixing that?
Well done for opening the S&S ISA. Once i have a decent savings pot and have moved house and filled up my cash ISA, i will be looking into similar ventures :)

Thanks WantToBeSE :) Well done on being hangover-free :) I am going to attempt a three-month stint without alcohol this year but will probably start mid-Feb and go through till mid-May. I reckon it would be a very valuable thing to do. And moneysaving too. :)

well the good news is there's nothing wrong with the boiler ... All that was wrong was the hot tap in the bath was running. :rotfl:Not gushing, just over a drip really, but enough to make the boiler think I wanted it to heat the hot water. I suppose it was in that state for, ooh, just over 24 hours? I noticed it very late last night. Not good that it was running all that time but at least I don't need to call out the plumber. :o Oh dear ... got a cold, not quite on top of things, I'm afraid :o

Great news on the boiler, Cathy :) Not so great news on the running tap though :D
I hope you are feeling better today? How is the car? Have you checked it yet?

Thanks WantToBeSE :) I can only blame myself for the running tap - I'm sure I would not have left it like that if I'd been feeling better. The boiler was not heating it overnight because I switched it off at the switch both nights, so there's that. I would think the cost of the water loss would not be too drastic. I'm not too bad, still not over my cold, and am taking it quietly at home. One of my neighbours (three doors down) runs some sort of car repair business and I planned to ring him and ask if he could take a look at it (not for free, but because he's close by). I suspect a pair of jumper leads would fix it. But maybe not today - I'm not quite well enough to venture out of doors yet and I'd have to take it for a longish drive as soon as the battery was recharged, which I'd rather not do in my dozy state. :)
  • As someone else mentioned a few posts back, I will also be having a dry January...although starting as of today. I never had any weekend where I didn't have at least a couple of beers last year. Off it until the 1st of Feb. Think it will impact my bank balance, health and happiness more thank I expect. So hopefully can carry it on into February after the first. I need a new laptop although I'm in no hurry to buy one. Once I have funds in place from savings then I will get it.

Off for a late New Years dinner at my folks house, thinking of the protein as I get stuck in!! My fitness goal for 2014 is to trim a few % in fat but also putting on some weight. With all my weights already paid for so I can workout from home plus my sky subscription I shouldn't miss being out every weekend.

That's a great idea - I'm going to have three months without alcohol myself but probably not till mid-Feb as I have a few friends' birthdays and other occasions between now and then. I reckon it's a brilliant thing to do though - the times I have done it I have felt so much better and more energetic.

Yep, this sounds great too. I have weights at home and could easily be using them instead of the gym. I need to give some consideration whether I should keep the gym up.

Sounds like a plan, YoungBusinessman. :)
  • Evening all!

Three cheers for Cathybird's heating - I'm glad it was just a case of snuffle-headedness rather than a problem with the boiler.

Another quiet day here - I've been enjoying reading the debate on the Tim Hale's book on the board. I'm still musing how to formulate a budget, it's slightly complicated by, despite being very happily married, OH and me keeping our finances largely separate. We both pay a set amount into a joint account which pays for all household and car stuff but otherwise we do our own thing. I think I'm going to end up doing two budgets - one for the household stuff and one for my personal stuff. How do other folk who are married do things?

An alcohol-free period sounds like a good idea, but it would definitely have to start at the end of the month for me as I refuse to have a dry birthday;) I'm not sure I could manage three months though!

That certainly made it cheaper but I still feel like a bit of an idiot :)

I'm not married but keeping the finances largely separate in the way that you do sounds like a recipe for sanity to me? Basic expenses covered, and otherwise there are no arguments - sounds very reasonable. Two budgets sounds like a workable idea too, if a bit more work. :)

I've done three months once before, though at the time I was trying to do a full year (which I didn't remotely manage) :o. Three months was actually okay though - the first two or three weeks you do miss it but then it's fine. I may not last this time but I'll certainly try.

Hiya Cathy, how are you feeling today? I hope you are better.

Today is my first AF (Alcohol Free) Friday night..eeek! I am planning reading a bit of my book, then painting my toe nails and generally pampering the bejeezus out of myself (face pack, hair pack, lotions, potions etc, you get the gist) :)

I have an alcohol free day, Monday.

I am sticking to that, not looking to add in another 29-30 lol.
