VAT on Electricity & Gas

Hi
This is my first post but I am hoping someone will have some insight into this.
I own a business where I live above (and behind) the premises and I pay business energy rates and pay full VAT on these, however, I was speaking to a customer recently who mentioned that the energy companies have been incorrectly charging customers VAT rates in circumstances such as mine.
I wonder if anyone has come across this before as I cannot find anything online. If I have been overcharged VAT on my energy bills this could amount to a significant amount of money that is due to be refunded.
Thanks for reading and hopefully someone will have some insight!
Thanks

Don't you reclaim the VAT?0

Hi,
vat on domestic bills is 5%, business bills, standard rate.
Check your bills to see what has been charged.0 -
Just to muddy the waters is your business on a flat rate VAT scheme?0

Thanks for your replies. I am not VAT registered so cannot reclaim the VAT.
I'm being charged the standard business rate of VAT, although I am also living in the property.
Any views?
thanks again0 -
Is your domestic accommodation separately metered from the business ?

Have you rung the VAT office? You aren't ask to reclaim the VAT as such. You are asking to get back what you should not have paid.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0

As mentioned above you need to have separate meters due to the differences in VAT rates. You could try to reclaim some of the VAT previously paid if you can get them to agree to a split in the past energy usage.
Your accountant should have picked this up as the business has effectively been paying for your personal energy usage unless you make a contribution.
Good luck with the 'VAT Man'.0
