When I get down to it, 'cos there are other things in the tuit queue, I shall put a brief note asking the reccommends to be for books the poster can highly praise and uses a lot and couldn't possibly do without.

A tuit is a "I'll do that when I get round to it" - (Say the bold bit out loud :) )

My favourite cookery book is one I got from an elderly neighbour over 15 years ago. Its called "Look and Cook" from "The Gloucestershire Training College of Domestic Science" and it's brilliant! The Preface says : "This book has been writeen by a group of Lecturerers of this College tin repsonse to a request from many schols for a first cookery book which will be more than a mere book of recipes and will give the 'how' and 'why' of cookery in a simple way"

I'd love some of the other books that are mentioned inside of it, but I haven't found any of them yet. I think its time for an ebay search ;)

Just noticed that it was last reprinted in 1955 so I may have problems:eek:

http://www.abebooks.co.uk might be able to help you find those books. Or perhaps here http://www.greenmetropolis.com

Thanks for those links. I had alook around for the books, some are available but the prices start from £9 on some of the sites and one wanted £12 for "look and cook" in worse condition that mine! I think I'll just keep my eyes open on Amazon and eBay.

The more places you look the more likely you are to find a good deal. My Victory Cookbook arrived this morning, it's fascinating! I got it used from Amazon for £4 - you gotta be quick :)

Edit: Oh, and keep going back and looking because you never know when a cheaper copy might turn up.

My eldest went into the Works yesterday to get me The Victory Cookbook and the lazy devils said they probably had it but it was in the delivery which they hadn't unpacked yet. They wouldn't even go upstairs and look for her so she's making a special trip in tomorrow to get it for me as an extra birthday pressie.

p.s. don't expect to see me tomorrow as I shall be hiding under the duvet all day with a large bottle of alcohol :(
