Ecomomy 7 reversed meter?

Hi All,

I moved into a new home in August so am new to ecomomy 7.

To make it simple I'll make my start reading 0.

move in date (12 weeks ago) Today

- rate 1 - 0 235
- rate 2 - 0 1010

My bill shows the 'day' rate as the usage for rate 1 and vice versa.

Now I have attempted to use some electric at night with timer etc but to use 5 times more at night seems excessive to me.

Question is what do I do about it?

    What to do?

Well first off, investigate to see if the rates you are being charged are appropriate to the time of use (it's not entirely clear from your post)

If they are not, have you considered contacting your supplier about it? I would have thought that would be a good first step to resolving the issue, wouldn't you?

If they are correct, have you considered getting yourself an energy monitor? That will show you how much electricity you are using and when.
(or you could just look at your meter, but a monitor might be more convenient)

How is your water heated? If it's heated by an immersion heater on the E7 circuit then those figures are very reasonable. Your day usage is very low. 80% night usage is good.

  • Thanks for the reply's.

During the day my rate 2 moves and on my bill the rate 2 is what my supplier calls night.

I have GCH and and an electric hob. My gas, however, is very expensive even though my boiler is around 30 years old, I have used £100 in just 6 six weeks with no heating on!

Was hoping just to keep quiet about the meter.

Can do if you want but as you know it's reading in reverse you can expect a big bill in the future. The 12 month exemption doesn't apply.

So you have GCH-then what do you have running on th E7 rate-an immersion heater?
For most people with GCH and DHW, E7 makes no sense (though some people may save a little), so you may want to consider a tariff/meter change.
But I can't imagine that you can be using 80% of your leccy on night rate if you neither space heat nor produce your hot water with it.,
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You have got to establish yourself the correct switchover times for the cheap 7 hours. The analogue timeswitches can be so far out that the cheap 7 hours could be anywhere. a lot of the new digital meters default to show the rate in progress. Rate 1 is usually day. The Ampy meters have their own built in time switch and also show the time it thinks it is. I have found many of these have drifted off an hour or two, they are set at GMT . Radio Teleswitch timers are accurate .
