I think it is perfectly acceptable to give cash if that is what the recipient would prefer. My in-laws give us cash presents every birthday and Xmas, it's most welcome as we can then choose exactly what we want when we're ready.

Yes, I'd give money if that's what he wants. If wrapping the presents gives you a lot of pleasure, there's nothing to stop you wrapping it, perhaps 'russian-doll' style?

When I was 21 my gran gave me 21 pound coins, she made a birthday card and inserted them in the shape of a heart. I was thrilled - not at the monetary value, but at the thought that had gone into to it. (of course though I was grateful for the cash too :) )

I must be alone in hating giving cash. It's like saying "you're only worth £10".

Why not get him something he will use with mountaineering?
Solves all the problems then :)
But get something that he will really use for a long time, not just something that will be used once and thrown away.

how about giving some money but also buying a token present that links in with what he want to put the money towards...maybe some thermals or socks

I get the idea of some aftershave,if thats what he wants, but unless you actually know what he likes then you could also be buying something that wont get used....or indeed just end up getting a Boots gift card which kind of feels as if you've come full circle back to the cash option!

I hate giving cash it always feels like a cop out present like no thought has gone in to it.. but as an adult if he is saving to do something special then give the cash... you could always get him some thick socks for his course to wrap or some gloves or something too.

From the other side i'd always rather receive a gift of some sort rather than cash, it seems people have put a biy of thought and gone out. But i suppose if the money is what he's asked for i'd go along with it.

Just addressing the aftershave question: I know what he uses because I have bought it for him before :)

In 90 % of cases I want to get money as a present, this is practical and comfortable, and you avoid filling your home with crap not used!!! Love money as a present :)

I would if that's what the person wants, saves thinking of what to get them too. I do kind of dislike giving money though because I always feel like I have to give more, as they can see what you're spending. For instance, I can't get a good deal on something that looks more than what I've spent, e.g. it looks worth £15 and I actually got it for £10, but if giving cash I have to give the £15.
