It's easy to tell a troll from a non-troll...
watch their forum count.
If they are new and genuine, it's likely they will post meaningful posts on other threads.
In fact, I am surprised at the OP coming back to post more. But I agree with above... what a lonely life they must lead to create a new account and a half believable story just to see what happens.0 -
While I share your caution, I am sorry to say that corporations are far more aggressive than they were 40 years ago and i am prepared to believe that in rare circumstances (several hundred times a year across the UK) a supplier will get a warrant for a wrong address or for the right address with no grounds and without affording the resident the chance to attend a hearing. And that they will proceed to execute the warrant without the true facts (as opposed to the given in court facts) actually supporting the action taken.
And I would not be surprised to see similar come up on these forums several times a year
They occur when Landlords fail to switch the energy to their name and address and the new tenants eventually move in to find the gas capped after PP's were installed or the supply capped if PP's were already installed.
With regards to the OP, there is nothing that we can do apart from advise you to contact the supplier (you don't actually name them in your post and raise a complaint.0 -

I disagree. You presume a particular level of confidence and/or competence and condemn anyone who doesn't fit your particular forum member stereotype to being a troll. In fact, even when they don't fit your particular forum member stereotype you still condemn them.
When I joined I posted with a specific question and didn't feel I had anything to offer anyone else on other threads. I didn't take time to go browsing the other forums; I joined for the particular reason and only came back to see responses. And, to be honest, if I'd received the judgemental responses from some on this thread, there's no way I'd want to continue to participating in such a type of forum. Luckily for me, people were less agressively hostile when I originally joined, and I eventually came back to become a more active forum member.0 -

Not sure about that! If you had debts 40 years ago your gas or electricity supplier would have cut you off, and kept you without supply until the bill was paid. Now they are only allowed to fix a pre-payment meter.
Well, that's progress (of sorts)!0 -
I am quite sure they are more aggressive. They might have less power to cut people off. But 40 years ago, if they got a warrant for entry, you could be jolly sure that the nationalised utilities would have followed the process correctly. These days, they will get warrants despite arrangements being in place and adhered to - and it seems in this case they are not at all careful about letting the alleged debtors have their day in court. Plus you could not trust them not to get a warrant on the wrong address or to go to the right house if the got the warrant right.bengal-stripe wrote: »Not sure about that! I remember - probably 10+ years ago no - seeing a fuel company rep obtaining warrants of entry at the magistrates' court.
He swore an oath to tell the truth, handed in (or the magistrates already had, I forget) the list of properties involved. Confirmed on oath that they met the criteria. And the magistrates granted all the warrants.
It took minutes and there was no individual scrutiny.
Things may have changed since, I admit, but it felt slightly as though justice hadn't been seen to be done.0 -
Getting back to the OP, who don't forget asked for advice, it is interesting that they haven't re-appeared.
Their post was written as if the visit 'came out of the blue' and I am far from convinced that is the situation.
A few more details might help us give advice.0 -
OP has posted more than once on the thread, so it was not a complete drive by. Once people who have been around a while appear to gang up on a newbie on any forum, it never gets better. So I am not surprised they have not come back.Getting back to the OP, who don't forget asked for advice, it is interesting that they haven't re-appeared.

I don't blame them and we can't really draw any conclusion from the fact that they have not come back because the reaction has been a bit hostile. And given that the situation is a bit stressful they are likely to be a bit more sensitive about criticism.
It is quite unfortunate for us that we have denied ourselves the opportunity to get a full first hand account of the warrant process. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0
