No Gas Meter

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can advise me.

I am in the process of exchanging my flat however I have just found out that I have gas that I have not paid for since I moved in back in 2007.

When I moved in to the property I contacted British Gas/National Grid and they confirmed that there was no gas registered at my address. I have no radiators and my cooker is electric and thought the boiler was electric too.

However I have had a survey done and the survey confirmed to my surprise that my boiler is gas.

I spoke to my neighbour and was advised where the gas meter was.

As I have not paid a bill I am now getting a tad nervous.

I contacted British Gas and I gave them the serial number of the gas meter that is associated with my flat and they have no record of the meter. BG advised me to give the meter point reference number to National Grid and they confirmed that there was no gas registered for this property and for me to call the M number Line and they should be able to point me in the right direction. Called the M Number line and they confirmed that British Gas is the supplier to my property.

The problem is British Gas can not find my serial number/Meter Point reference number
anywhere. Im now worried that I am going to get a massive gas bill.

I made contact with them initially when I moved in and they confirmed I had no gas and thought nothing of it.

Apparently they have a meter number that is registered to my property with the wrong serial number. However they have never sent me a bill! which I find very strange.

If the meter is not registered how can they bill me? and if they can bill me would I have to pay for the entire usage or will the back billing law apply (as I have never received a bill)

Its all a tad messy however I would like the situation resolved as don't want the new property owner to have any issues.

Any Advise would be appreciated

Thanks

WK

Make and model of your boiler? If you have no radiators, how come you have a gas boiler(or inded any kind of boiler)-what would it's purpose be and how would it heat the flat? How is the property otherwise heated and hot watered?
Are you sure that the 'boiler' is not simply an immersion heater? Who carried out the survey?
Baffles me how you can live in a property for some years and not know how the heat and hot water is produced?
The back-billing rules do not apply if you made no attempt to contact the supplier-and saying that you didn't know there was a gas supply will not be a valid excuse.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Normally I agree with your sound opinion macman; I certainly can't fathom how someone for 6 years didn't know how the heat was being generated!

However, I suspect that seeing as it appears the gas meter has never been registered that the OP will manage to get the back-billing rules applied. That failing was something that wasn't down to the consumer (although the whole situation is a bit of a car crash).

I'd hope that the fact that OP contacted BG at the start, would count for back-billing purposes.

If its not a registered meter, it may not be a genuine supply in which case grid can bill you.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

But BG are not the supplier, they're just one potential supplier.
OP needs to clarify if they want advice. If there is no gas boiler, then no gas has been used, and the only charges accruing will be standing charges.
What property would have a 'boiler' but no rads?
