Any suggestions appreciated please:
I have a desktop pc connected to router via ethernet cable.
Having started the computer i try to connect to the internet but cannot open my home page. I am not techie, but i can see that the internet is indeed connected on the small icon in taskbar and my ipad works wirelessly.
I have changed the ethernet cable without success.
I spoke to my isp o2 -they took me throgh some steps inorder to view Device Manager. I saw that 7 of the 9 Network Adaptors have yellow warning signs.
I dont know what these adaptors are!...nor do i understand what effect they have!....
The man at o2 said that the drivers need updating......i havent got a clue what anyone is talking about.....
Can any kind soul advise me?...
I use windows xp....
I should add that this seemed to start when i installed avg2014....but i think its coincidence as i have now removed avg and have the same issue....

IE, tools, internet options, advanced, reset.
start,
run
cmd
ok
in the black box, type
ipconfig
and post the results, along with a screen shot or name of the adapters in device manager, and a hiajckthis log, instructions are in the speedup sticky thread above.
if the ipconfig brings up a number starting with 169
type
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
1 - on the router it 'should' have numbers 1 - 4. One for each of the ethernet ports on the router. Are any flashing?
2 - are there any flashing lights near the network cable on the PC?
3 - hit start > run > (type in) cmd (press enter). In the black box type in ipconfig and hit enter. It'll give you a load of 'stuff', there'll be a line that says IP Address and to the right of it it'll have 4 sets of numbers, something along the lines of 192.168.1.2. are there any and if so, what are they?
If you do have an IP address that starts 192.168. Type in ping www.google.co.uk and hit enter it should give you either 4 replies or it'll time out, or give destination unreachable.
4 - there shouldn't be 9 network adapters but you can right click them in Device Manger and uninstall them. You can either do a scan for new hardware or reboot and it should pick them up and hopefully install when it comes back up.......... but if you've got an IP address you might not need to remove them.
Edit... apparently it took me longer than 6 minutes to type that.0 -
Thanks so much for speedy replies. I hope my post made sense as i am really confused by this problem...will respond when my head stops hurting.
Out of interest does closed agree with gypsy?..and vice versa...dont want to cause arguments as you are both very knowledgable...thanks0 -
yep. they're pretty much the same - Closed's post and my number 3, we just went for different angles on the IP address - mine is picking up an IP address, and Closed's is seeing the router but not being able to pick up an IP address.
my number 1 & 2 were just to see if there's any traffic going between them.0 -

Drivers are here under Driver-Original > Fall 2006 Original Realtek LAN Drivers
But you should try to update the Driver via Device Manager first.
If that doesn't work, then uninstall the Driver and reinstall from the link above.0 -
Hi guys I'm having similar problems with my laptop. It won't connect to the internet via Ethernet or wifi. I've been in touch with ISP on 3 occasions each time we go through a process similar to that suggested above. The ipconfig reset etc.
The problem is fixed for a short time, in some cases a matter of minutes. I'm hoping for some help, with this one to fix it for good.
Thanks to all in advanceMFiT-T2 Questee number 1460
