hi...me and my hubby ar e trying to do our staircase up too...used the nitro, it stank, and made our hads feel dizzy at end of day.
we brought a heat gun at car boot and one off freecyle, and we would ssay this method is much easier and gives you better results.
    good luck.

  • We had a staircase that was dark green paint on top of dark varnish.
After 20mins with some sandpaper I thought sod it and replaced the whole staircase.
I found this to be an much more enjoyable job. Fitted and painted in one weekend.

    Hi all

Thanks for your replies, as u can tell not been on here for a few days... due to it taking soooo long - iblob I know what u mean about the varnished staircases in new houses as there really nicer in old houses but I love them! so no turning back now - thanks for taking ur time to send such a long reply!

We have struggled our way through it (only a few spindles to go now) using nitromors & a 'mouse' sander - couldn't use heat gun as the staircase is only 3 yrs old & had 1 coat of varnish on so didnt want to risk harming the wood!

I can see already that im going to like it better much lighter so its well worth the week or so ive been doing it! (not every day).

Hopefully tomorrow I will be telling u all that we've finished!!!!

    Good Luck to all :)
