Sorry to read about your son's diagnosis. This doesn't relate to insurance but might be useful to know at this early stage.

On the travel front, he will qualify for a disabled person's railcard which costs £20 for a year's pass, and then reduces the cost of fares by 33%. A companion also gets the reduction when you travel together. Forms available from train stations or online.

Local authorities give a free bus pass for people with epilepsy, amongst other conditions where the DVLA rules don't allow people to drive for a period of time. It's a poor substitute for the freedom of having one's own car, but actually many people with epilepsy find it invaluable for getting around, and saves money too.

The larger epilepsy charities have info and advice helplines, and depending where you live there may be local epilepsy info and support available face to face, if you or your son feel the need. It can be very helpful to talk to someone who understands the issues and knows what help is available on the ground.

Thank you so much GQ! We have a lot of research to do by the looks of it! The bus pass will be very useful, so we'll get to that early next week! Hospital appointment to get through first to see if his broken nose needs setting! :)

The person diagnosed with Epilepsy has no licence to drive, he must surrender his licence or as instructed and inform his insurance and cancel his policy and declare the vehicle SORN until it is sold.

Why does he need to cancel his policy and declare the car SORN?

OP, his insurers obviously need to know that he can't drive but they may agree to keep the policy going, with someone else as the main driver.

This is because, if the new "main driver" totals a brand new £120k Bentley the first policy holder will have an almighty claim on his insurance and in 12 months when he is fine to drive on a E-class licence, which he is going to be as we have all crossed our fingers, he wont be left with a loaded policy for 6 years.
That and not withstanding you have to hold a driving licence to drive.
    Be happy...;)

I informed the insurance company today and they confirmed insurance will continue to run (obviously not for him to drive) in case car is stolen from the driveway! As I'm a named driver they said I'm still insured as I would like to take it out a couple of times to keep it running! My oldest son has been over to visit today & will sell his car ASAP! He'll then take Mikes car & insure it for the time he wants it. It should then be the time to make a decision on what to do regarding selling!

So what you are saying is that he doesn't have to cancel his policy and SORN the car?

If the new main driver doesn't have a claim, then the policyholder will have another years NCB which could be quite useful to him when he gets his licence back.

You need to have a licence to drive but don't always need a licence to have car insurance

OP.........The NCB & cancellation fee issue means it could well be worth Mike keeping the policy going but with you/his elder brother named as main driver

we had to get a form from our local council office get my dd's GP to fill it in then take it back to the council office who then gave us a letter to take to the bus station to get her pass.

Hopefully they will bring it under control with medication . i often find the injuries dd sustains are harder to deal with sometimes than the seizures.

Thank you spacey2012, very good advice for me to follow!

I think I'm just shell shocked so will start to do the separation & put things in order quickly! Mike has already printed the DVLA form to submit his licence so we're starting to get it together!
