How to Backup iPod to External HD

I want to backup my ipod to an external hard drive.

Each time I choose the backup option itunes only recognises backup to a CD / my CD drive.

What is the best way to back up my ipod to my external hard drive ?

if it is just the music you want off it, you would be best to look at something like sharepod. but don't you have all the music in your iTunes library?

Since your iPod just copies files that are on your PC already, all you need to do is to back up the right folder on your PC. If your iPod gets trashed, it doesn't matter - you just re-sync it from your PC.

Or perhaps you are talking about taking files of an iPod without having them on your PC. If so, you can use EphPod, which can pull all of the files off your iPod.
