Yahoo/MSN Lottery Prize is this a scam?

I have just been sent an e-mail from Yahoo/MSN saying I have won a prize in their lottery draw. Is this a scam. Has anyone else heard of this before?

How many tickets did you buy in this lottery? If the answer is 'None', it's a scam.

A simple google search for yahoo/msn lottery turns up dozens of web sites for fraud warnings...

  • Thanks for that soolin. I didn't send any details to the company at all, but it seems many people have. So for anybody else reading this e-mail. On guy sent all his details to the alledged company and they e-mailed him back asking for £600 to cover postage and insurance etc. Do not reply to these e-mails. Do not send any personal details whatsoever.

Scottish Princess, this is actually a variation on very common scam. The one reported most concerns overseas lotteries and people have been conned for thousands.

Really though the simple answer is as maninthestreet suggests, you can't have won if you didn't enter but this one relies on a certain naivety on the part of the victim. That's why so many elderley and confused people seem to be targets, it isn't that the scammer has been clever to target these people, it is just that they tend to be the ones that fall for it as they have a better view of others than we younger cynics.

No one can con you if you use basic common sense as you did in questioning the email on here. Any thing that looks 'odd' can usually be debunked on a quick google search, so if in doubt try that and prepare to be shocked.
