Workmate bought car with 12 1/2 months road tax on it.

A work colleague bought a new (2nd hand car) this week, and the tax disc expiry is 10/14. The previous owner had gotten the tax refunded by DVLA for their unused months.

Surely then the tax disc should expire 09/14.

How has this happened, and is the car not taxed until 1st November?

Thanks

  • Tax disc is to last day of October 14, we are already two & half weeks through October 13.

That means he bought car with 12 months tax on (Less a week or two)

Previous owner would have had refund for each complete month left so the months count starting November.

Your friend has purchased a tax disc to start from 1st November.

The previous tax disc should cover them, unless it has been cancelled immediately by the DVLA.

    Best to check on https://www.gov.uk/tax-disc

There are 13 days of October left so that means there are 12 months and 13 days till the disc expires.

    Yes that makes sense.

So if previous owner got unused months refunded say on the 3rd October, then it would still be valid for October.

But the tax disc he is showing on his car isn't valid until 1st November 2013.

I believe he is currently relying on the last of the previous tax disc.

Yes that's right. As long as the DVLA haven't cancelled it part month, which I don't thing they do.

DVLA will clamp him unless he has the actual disc.

If the tax disk is dated till the end of October 2014 then there's a chance it's not taxed to be driven now. If they put 12 months on it's probably taxed from the 1st November to 31st October.

Although you can check here --> https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla

    OK thanks everyone.

The garage/dealer arranged the new tax disc, not sure if this might affect things.

DVLA website says Licence Not Due

So it must be on the Old owner's tax for October.
