Alternative to Sky router.

My Sky router (new one) shows download speeds via the cable of 16 but over the wireless we are getting 8. It often comes up with bandwidth error. I am thinking perhaps we buy a decent router ourselves, maybe even one that we can use for 5ghz as well as 2ghz? It would be worth it alone if I can get one that allows me to restrict certain users at certain times as I miss that from our old BT router. Any recommendations appreciated please?

think it might be more trouble than it's worth to replace the router.
Not sure if things at SKY have changed but in the past they were very reluctent to give users their "username and password" the sky routers have them stored in the device but not in an area a user could get access to. But I think their are username/password generators you can use to find your username and password combo.
So it is not impossible to replace the router with your own preferred choice, it's just very hard to get everything playing nice!.
Also I think their is a problem with the type of Connection protocol/authentication Sky uses, it's not generally the type used by ADSL Routers (PPPoA is what ADSL usually use, But SKY uses one called MER which very few routers can use.)
Only thing I can suggest is hanging out and asking questions here:

They will be better able to tell you what routers you can use and if you need to use alternate "firmware" in those routers to get it to play nice with SKY.
Sky have been saying for the past 2 years or so they are going to let users use their own routers at some point in the future, but nothings happened yet!Laters

I have just signed up for Sky and changed the SR101 Hub they sent me today to my old Billion 7800N.
I think the 7800N is a cracking router and there is a lot of stuff online to show you how to do it.0
