This must be widespread, one of my sons got caught out last week at North Finchley high street.
He is normally very careful but says there was nothing to indicate a dodgy atm his card was retained after he had put in his pin,but in his case the message temporary fault was displayed on screen.
His first thought that the machine was faulty and that he would call into the bank next morning. But on getting home he reported the matter to his bank and they advised that they would cancell his card.
Looking at his on line account next morning he found £100 cash had been taken out this was his initial request, then afterwards the card had been used at an offlicence and a local supermarket.
He contacted the police but was told to ring some new fraud unit. The good news was that his bank Nat. West refunded all the money.0 -

I think it's technically a crime against the bank, not you.Littleweedj wrote: »Also after reporting this at my local police office I'm feeling even angrier.
Spent half an hour submitting a crime report then the officer left to obtain a crime number. On return was informed that it wouldn't be filed as a crime as the bank had reimbursed me the money so it hadn't actually been stolen from me ......... What???????? so if I hadn't been reimbursed by my bank it would be a crime!! So instead it is recorded as an "incident".
So if a crime is to be judged on that criteria; if I was close to dying after an assault but the medical profession saved me does that mean no crime has been committed but if I died then it would be.
Well done on shielding your PIN though - it's amazing the number of numpties who make no attempt whatsoever to. I was in a queue at the supermarket kiosk a few days ago and I now know the PIN numbers of the 3 people ahead of me in the queue! (or did at the time).
Even if you only have one hand free it's easy enough to put fingers over multiple keys to make it less obvious which key you're pressing.0 -

I agree it is a crime against the bank but it is also a crime against me. The fraudster/s have stolen my card, they took the money I needed, and attempted to gain more, I have no access to funds until a new card is received, I will now have to contact various firms to cancel and update direct debit details, transfers etc. etc. I'm aware this is my own fault for not noticing there was anything different looking at the ATM. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Although obviously pleased to be reimbursed by my bank it appears this is now so common place that all banks are having to compensate victims for this crime. However, it would appear that technology to combat fraudulent transactions is constantly being thwarted with the perpetrators outwitting the banks security at every turn.0 -

Not really, as if you read the leaflet you get with any CC/DC you will see in the Terms etc. that the card remains the property of the issuing bank.0 -
You don't have to update any details, your account number remains unchanged.0

You should be able to go into your bank with some ID and get money out over the counter. At least I was able to when I lost my card a few years back.0 -
OP have you been in the Amazon for the last 10 years?0
