Breadmaker > Oven Conversion For Cake

Options
In my breadmaker recipe book there is a recipe for Treacle, Date and Walnut cake. But instead of making it in the breadmaker, I want to use the oven and my rubbery bread pan that I bought a while back. It says to use the bake only option on the bread maker so I'm not sure how long or what heat would be required in the oven as I'm new to cake making!

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Plus any pitfalls I might encounter because of using the oven and not the breadmaker.

Many thanks in advance.

Can anyone help, I am currently in the process of making this cake now. Just need an oven tempreature and duration for a typical cake. Thanks.

Hi, HIT! It depends on the size of the cake, and the type of mixture.

For a sponge cake - around gas 5 for 30 mins.

Fruit cake - gas 3 for 45-60 mins.

I'm going for the large. 170g of dates, 225g of flour, 115g butter, lemon, 60ml golden syrup, 1 large egg, 75g chopped wallnuts, 80ml milk, 115g muscovado sugar, grated ginger cinnamon and nutmeg, 30ml tracle. Think I'll go for the full hour.

    Many thanks.

Pop round, I'll give you a slice! You'll have to use your personal Lear jet from Yorkshire though, because with me around the cake wont be for long!

There is a problem here. Its been in the oven 1 hour 25 minutes and its still not cooked all the way through. At 55 minutes I took it out and stuck a knief in it, it was liquidy inside. I increased the oven from 180 to 195 and left it 15 minutes. Still liquid. Added the topping and put it about for 25 minutes... its still liquidy. I've dropped the temp down to 100 for now, maybe another half hour at this temp will finish it off? I dont want to keep the tempreature high as it looked likely to burn on top if I left it any longer. Its an electric oven, maybe thats the fault? Any ideas?

When I make dough in the BM, it often comes out wetter than if I make it by hand. Did the cake mix seem like usual cake consistency when it went in the oven?

Try putting a cold baking sheet on a shelf immediately above the cake. Otherwise a piece of foil over the cake. This will help the cake to cook, and stop the top burning.

Thanks Penelope. I've just got it out again, it seems ok-ish now. Just tasted a bit though and its a bit disappointing!

Maybe it'll taste nicer when its cooled.

Try it with some butter  possibly with a sprinkle of spice.

Alternatively, try a recipe for date and walnut loaf or cake. This is like the one I use.
