Driving to Olympia exhibition centre? Easy?

Hi

My DS wants to go to an exhibition at Earls Court, now I have never driven in London before,. Does anyone know if its is easy to get to? Or a complete nightmare?

Thanks

  • Firstly, Olympia & Earls Court are two different venues, which one are you going to?!

    Is Olympia not in Kensington?

If so I would strongly recommend getting the train to it.

If you have to drive so far, I would suggest perhaps getting to the outskirts of London and then getting the tube, but personally the train does it for me. So much easier!

See getting the train and tube scares me more than driving there!

Will investigate the train and tube see if it looks easy.

    Thanks

Why? Are you far from London? I know central London reasonably well and am confident driving in it, but train and tube are often the better choice.

I make my choice based on health (I sometimes have mobility issues) but also time of day. E.g. This week I was in London for a medical appointment on the wrong side of central london for me during the day I got the train (less than two hours) and tube to the hospital and then tubed around London, meeting some MSE people for supper then went home on the train. Next week I am having supper with friends and my husband on my side of central London, (restaurant chosen to BE on my side of London!) and its in the evening when I can park, so I will drive up.

Driving in at the wrong time means Lots of wasted time sitting in a car doing nothing but getting bored.

London driving can be aggressive and very poorly signed. Its possible, millions do it daily! But the fact you are asking whether its easy leads me to raise these points. :) I do not intend disrespect.

Unless your picking up a car full of freebies, like I did at last years London vet show :D go on the train/tube its so much easier.

    Hi

Yes I'm miles away, had a look at the trains and it would require 3 changes so I just wondered if it would be easier to drive there with little one in tow, its also a lot more expensive to get the train.

I have a sat nav, just wondered what the immediate area was like, if the car parking was easy to find etc.

I don't mind sitting in the car doing nothing, the aggresive drving might leave me a bag of nerves though. I'm sure it will be fine.

Just need to bad weather they are predicting now to really make it fun!

London driving is quite pushy and I didn't like it, but plenty of people do manage so it's not impossible. You need to be fairly pushy back though - if you sat and waited to be let out, you'd take a long time to get anywhere, so you have to edge your way out of a side road, hold your place in a lane, etc.

Another option would be to drive to a train station with a more direct train. Check out what stations the most direct trains stop at, and car parking charges. It may be easier to get to a station on the outskirts of London and hop on the train for the remainder of the journey.

Although the district line only goes to Olympia station, it's very very infrequent from Earls Court station. So unless you've looked at the times for this i'd recommend the overground line, or a bus for the end of the journey.
