Second cardholder - credit checks on both?

I'm about to embark on a somewhat costly postgraduate course, and hoping to put as much of the year's expenditure as possible on a cashback credit card.
I doubt my profile is the sort that'd appeal to the cards I'm looking at - if the card were in a parent's name, with me as a second cardholder, would
(a) credit checks be carried out on me as well as the actual applicant?
(b) I be committing some sort of fraud?
Ta,
Nm.

Remember that your parent would have to understand that they would be making themselves liable for any money you spent on the card though
