Received a letter out of the blue from HFO Capital

Not sure if I am in the right place.
I received a letter today from HFO Capital regarding a Barclaycard debt I ran up about 10 years ago.
I was young and naive and ran up the debt which wasnt sensible.
I had Barclaycard on my back for a while but it all went quiet and then another company contacted me saying they had taken the debt on. I came to a verbal agreement with them for a monthly payment plan fearing that baliffs would call at my parents house and the debt would prevent me getting mortgages etc when I finally grew up.
The company whose name I can't remember refused to send me something in writing to confirm the agreement for me to sign and send back so I refused to pay til they did. Unsurprisingly they never sent me any paperwork. The debt went away again until today when I had a letter come to my parents house. (I no longer live there) stating the money was owed and I should get in touch ASAP to arrange payment.
I dont know what to do. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

when was the last time you made a payment towards the debt?0

6 full years must have elapsed between the last payment or offer to pay.
After this it becomes statute barred and even if you re-start payments after 6 clear years it remains statute barred and you can stop.
You need to sit down and work out your dates and if you have put your foot in it.Be happy...;)0 -
I'm confident it's been a lot longer than 6 years.
What's the next step.
Thanks for swift responses.0
