Why do only some energy price increases make the news?

EDF Variable rate for electricity have increases over 17% since April, however there was no fan fare at the time? :S Is it only the large spikes that catch the news headlines, rather than that ongoing small incremental increases? :S

They tend to roll out the same old stories for the first rise of the six and also every time bg increase as the name used to be nationalised and therefore a slightly more emotive story.

EDF hasn't had a price change since December 2012.

I suspect the OP is referring to a product closure where a cheap product ends and the customer is then moved onto the Standard Tariff, but its obviously free to engage with market and swap tariffs.

I am currently on the Blue+Price Promise February 2015 tariff which I moved over to in May this year. The rate p/KW for electricity and gas is 11.97p and 3.902p respectively. The current standard variable tariff is Electricity - 14.46, Gas - 4.042. As the SV tariff is usually lower than the fixed price options, I think it's good to assume that then they were below their Blue+Price Promise February 2015 tariff. Going off that tariff as reference, there has been at least a 17.22% increase in electricty prices, and a 3.46% increase in gas prices within the 5 month period. That isn't small fish - and there hasn't been any media hoo haa.

ollski - British Energy (now EDF) was publicly owned also.

If Standard Variable is lower, how does Martin Lewis instantly save you £200 by getting you off it?
