Have moved house...

...on July 19, and informed e-on that I was doing so. Shortly after I got a final bill for gas and electric for £19.10, which was settled in early August.

Yesterday I got a letter telling me that...."we've received meter readings that are different to the ones we used originally", along with a bill for £137.77. Putting aside the poor grasp of English, (It should be different from, not different to) am I obliged to pay this? I'm a single bloke who lives alone, and am always at work, so I was only paying £40 per month anyway, so this seems way OTT to me.

Did you give meter readings when you moved out?
    Were they accurate?

Were you renting or did you sell the place?
Did the new people move in straight away?

No, e-on took their own meter readings, so I've no idea how accurate. Not very, seemingly!

Was rented, no idea when new people moved in..

Sounds like your original final bill would have been based on estimated readings. Then the real final bill was based on a real reading.

Without having taken a reading yourself it will be hard to challenge.
You could ask the letting agent if they took a reading when you moved out. (They generally will have done.) If so, how does this compare to what the energy company say it was?
  • hang on, you lived in the property. did YOU take final readings?

Most unlikely they did a read the day you moved out? It's your job to take final readings and submit them. As above, without your own record, you are on a hiding to nothing.

It's hard not to agree with everyone else - if you didn't take your own readings and send them in when you vacated the premises then it's going to be impossible to dispute the bill.

Most of the problems that people have regarding bills are due them not reading and recording their own meter readings.

    Hi Russell1963

As others have said, sounds like the bill we sent when you first moved out was based on estimated meter readings. We'll have re-billed once we were given accurate readings.

Give us a call if you're struggling with this new balance. We'll be happy to look at setting up a payment arrangement to give you longer to pay. Might make things a bit easier.
