I have never tried this so I can't talk from experience but there is a website called ChatRoulette that allows you to talk to people across the world. There is quite a funny video that advertises it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6CXMwuPbYM btw I do also worry about the number of men who appear to be chatting from bed
but presumably you could always hang up if you needed to. There are also language exchange websites that might be more relevent to you.
You could also think about using some of the language exchange websites and possibly earn some cash as a tutor? or just have a chat with people?0 -
Hello Alyth! :T
You reminded me the fun I used to have with AOL chat - I was stuck at home on my own when my children were young and used to talk away to complete strangers. And that was on dial up!
I don't know that there is anything quite the same. I do chat to friends and family on face book chat. Hope you find something.
How long are you planning to stay there?0 -
I know a lot of people will think I'm mad for suggesting this but what about second life? There are people from all over the world on there and you can usually find someone who may share your interests and be happy to chat to you whatever the time of day or night.
A few years ago both OH and I joined - and had some amazing conversations with people from around the world. I don't use it at all now but it gave my OH a new interest in building his own world with buildings, land, people and so on. He has always been into computer graphics and has made/produced some amazing work -it's an absorbing hobby and one that can be picked up and put down at will - it needn't take over real life. We are too busy working, living, paying bills, enjoying grandkids and life too much for that.

The title 'Chatroulette' is a bit misleading. You get connected to random people throughout the world (that's the roulette bit) but chat is far from most people's minds IME. It's either drunk American teenagers, male persons wishing to show off their reproductive equipment, or weird folk who sit there in Star Wars costume and ask you what your sign is.
That's based on 10 minutes' experience, so may be unrepresentative, but I have never had the urge to do it again. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
thanks, there are some brilliant suggestions most of which I'd never thought of, so I'll check them out over the weekend. When I moved here I hadn't anticipated being placed in a school near Inner Mongolia, the teaching is great but I do feel terribly isolated, especially now that winter is setting in - I go walking, I go out on my bike, but I feel at times I've lost the ability to communicate in English!
Cazziebo I'm not planning on returning to Scotland any time soon, a friend is setting up a language school in a city next year so I've accepted a position there, where there are luxuries such as Starbucks and places I can buy food I can identify! If nothing else this is fantastic experience for me, but when it comes to a Friday night and I come back to my apartment, I do feel terribly isolated - however not lonely.0 -
How about asking for people to exchange emails with, probably a far better option than using old fashioned letters given where you are. I'm sure there are people on here who'd be happy to correspond with you.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
