Sponsorship/grants for a sports team?

Hi all,

As some of you will know, I run a small cheerleading team. We keep our heads above water financially but can't really afford extra equipment or uniforms.

We don't cheer for a sports team - we ARE one.

Does anyone know of any grants that might fit our criteria, or any companies who might sponsor us? In the grand scheme or things, we're after <£3k so not too much really.

You're best off with local companies, build a value proposition for them like 'sponsor a sleeve for £500' and do all your calculations to include the printing of their logo. Have a range of sponsorship options from maybe £250-£2500 and be very specific with where the cash will go. Much easier to sponsor £1388.40 for a specific kit list than a grand into a slush fund. Then door knock!

Go and talk to your bank, my bank (BOS) always seems to be throwing money at local sports clubs.

The Co-operative shop (your local one) does small grants for sports kit.
  • Thank you :) I shall try these this weekend.

Sport England have a small grants fund you may be able to apply to... funds from £300 to £10k

  • Thank you but I believe allstar cheerleading does not qualify for Sport England funding :(

    Hi there,

My sil is involved in running a competitive dancing group.

In order to apply for grants, they often request a copy of accounts - nothing fancy, just simple income and expenditure accounts. I think they managed to get a grant from their local council, and from the lottery.

If you are working in a deprived area, it might be worth trying comic relief etc.

There's also cash for clubs, but they only accept applications periodically.

Can you hold fundraising events? They used to an annual show for friends and families, £3.50 a ticket and did a raffle, a few games etc as well as selling bacon sarnies.

They also did bag packing at tescos and managed to raise enough to fund new competition outfits for forty plus kids ranging in age from four to eighteen.

With sponsorship, if the team are competing, are there rules whether sponsors logos can be displayed on the costume?

I'm seeing sil tonight so will ask her a bit more about the fundraising side of things.

    What about Awards for All?

Also google your local council for voluntary service and see if they have access to a grants finding program, or training in fundraising.

Sport England, BAA (if you're near an airport), and the lottery fund are three to consider. Possibly also your district/county council (borough in London).

Chances are you'll get a match grant if awarded, and it's possible to put two match grants together.
