Not for profit

Having worked (volunteer) for a nfp enterprise recently I've seen a ''hole'' that needs filling linked to local unemployment. I'm retired (at 58) and do the odd bit of paid work here and there.
My vision is a nfp enterprise filling this hole and also paying me a small wage (prob 25 hrs week at min wage) initially and if it works then possibly another 1 or 2 p/t people to help.
Rather than stumble around the internet does anyone know of the best few initial sites / people etc to aim for to be able to start a plan. Particularly with regard to rules / grants etc
Thanks

Good idea. Why not set this up yourself?

Unfortunately most people are in business to make money, but if you, as a retired person, are happy to organise and run a business for nothing to give local unemployed people a chance at getting on the employment ladder, go for it.

My question to you is where is all this work that would pay the minimum wage coming from, and why hasn't anyone offered/taken up such employment, even if only for 25 hours per week? There are certainly a lot of people who are currently unemployed and are looking for part time, rather than full time, work to suit their ciurcumnstances.

I could be wrong but I understood that regarding grants for nfp you can build in wages ??? I can actually do this as a complete charity using JCP facilities (free) and a local printer (mate = at cost if not free) and my time (could be free) but I am searching for a p/t job at about 20 hours per week for the ''extras fund'' (new grandchild / helping kids (adults!) more than I am already - lol) so was thinking ''combine the 2'' and bang !!!

is the answer to start as a charity - build it up - then aim for funding to cover expansion and wages ??? I'm just so keen to do this and if it could produce a few quid income then fantastic.

I don't know about other places in the country but here in Norfolk we have the NRCC

    http://www.norfolkrcc.org.uk/wiki/index.php/Community_Support

there may be one local to you.

They would help you with a business plan, raising grant funding - and setting up a CIC (Community Interest Company, I would think from the little you have put that would serve you well).

Like I say - no idea where you are, but you may have someone similar near you?

starting a charity is not for the fainthearted, we have a sticky about doing it, and the general advice is to find one already doing what you want to do.

You could talk to your local voluntary services (google that plus your area) and see if they can offer any advice. There are 'new' structures which might fit better, but I don't know enough about them to advise!

Don't be fooled by these not for profit scams, sure they don't make a profit because the directors take it all in wages and perks, which is the legal loophole in these organisations.
  • Thanks all - I'm on it. I'll tell you how it went in about 6 months.:T
