Faulty TV less than 12mths old

Options
A TV purchased from a High street supermarket less than 12 mths ago has developed a fault.

Problem is, at time of purchase we had major building work being carried and in the process lost the receipt also it was paid for in cash.

This TV is only from one source and found from using the Engineering Menu screen. I found it was manufactured in Feb 2012, showing that it is less than 2 yrs old.

How do I stand with this before contacting the store.

thanks

Even if the product is only sold at one place, without proof of purchase there no way you can show that the television was purchased anywhere.

Without any proof of purchase I fear you will struggle.

Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights article for more information.

If we assume for a moment that you did have proof of purchase, you would probably have to prove to the seller that the problem wasn't due to misuse or fair wear and tear before they would consider offering a remedy.

What guarantee does the manufacturer offer?
One year, or two years... or more?

But manufacturers also usually want proof of purchase too.

    Should be fine

When you purchase any device with a TV tuner, the store is required by law to take your address details, so any (half competent) store should have this information saved electronically making it easy to find your details.

    Where was it purchased from?

Not to disagree with you really as you are right that an address is taken but the shop doesn't have to search it's systems to help you provide proof of purchase, it is your own responsibility to look after it so it can't always be relied on that them taking your address will help at all in this situation.

Most places would look it up for you as good customer service but they don't have to.

But they do. You can request to see any details they hold on you under the "Subject Access Request" from the Data Protection Act, it may cost you £10 at the most, however any half decent multi-national retailer who takes the details electronically stores them in a searchable database along with other purchases that take your details (like extended warranties details or items with a high cost price and details are taken for the warranty etc etc etc) which should be a simple lookup in the store (or via Head Office)
