If they've passed it but it's still smoking, talk to VOSA.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

If a garage had my vehicle for nearly three months i would have considered it sold and wondered where my money is.
  • Thank you for all your replies. Its a Renault Kangoo 53 plate. I did say at the start that I knew the van was only worth £1000 tops, I really wanted to be told it wasn't worth fixing if that was the case so I could spend the money on a new vehicle. He says £1750 is reasonable which is why I spoke to DVLA to see if I could sign it over, as if its worth that much to him maybe he could keep it as payment. I have also paid 3 months insurance for a vehicle I still have not got.
I agree that they just seem to be trying one thing and then another and I am being charged at each point. they had also smashed up and charged me for an internal fan that had only been replaced by them 3 months ago (I have a receipt for this)
Am so upset as van is integral to my work and been making do with car in hope van was going to be fixed, I know with hind sight 10 weeks is ridiculous but he kept saying van was in pieces so had no idea what else to do, they pretty much have you over a barrel and have no one who knows any better or knows cars otherwise would probably not be in this position. I know people might think I am naive etc but this is not my area of expertise, just the same as the mechanic would not have a clue in terms of my profession, so thank you to anyone being kind and helpful rather than judging.
  • PS been on MOT website and it says van passed, even after being told smoke will cause us to be stopped by police. But if I go to VOSA will it just spiral all out of control or is it already at that point? Thank you

If the van has passed it's MOT, then it won't be smoking that badly as the MOT for a diesel is basically a smoke test. The engine is revved 3 times to full throttle & each time it is checked to see how much smoke comes out of the exhaust.
That is it as far as emissions testing for diesels goes. They should not do a gas test as this is not a requirement.

Pick the van up & pay them the bill. Chances are it's the EGR causing the smoke. Even Renault suggest buying & fitting a blanking kit to eliminate the problems caused by dirty EGR's.
Shove in a bottle of fuel-based cleaner every time you fill up & the smoke will slowly disappear.

Also, take it to a decent garage for a 2nd opinion as this one seems to be run by cowboys.

It's possibly too late to speak to VOSA as they normally have a one month limit to appeal any test result (three months in the case of corrosion). They may get involved as the vehicle hasn't left the garage since passing the test. What is the date of the MOT pass certificate?

There is no way the van should have passed the overall MOT test if the exhaust smoke is as bad as they say it is.

  • The MOT was right at the end as it was overdue after the ten week wait so have filled in form for VOSA. He won't let us have the van until we pay and I don't want to pay and then have to fight to get money back.. Also I think van is illegal to drive with the smoke pouring out the back, plus it took two guys three attempts over ten minutes to start it as the immobiliser kept kicking in and the way they stopped it was by bashing it. Reading my messages back I feel like an idiot for trusting them, it's in a worse state than it went in.

When he phoned and said the injectors didn't fix it, what did you both agree from there?
