Headphones return

Hello all,
Long term visitor first time postee. I recently bought a pair of headphones. Having tried them at home I found them to be too heavy on the bass. Today I returned to the shop where I bought them to see whether or not I could exchange them for a different pair; a pair which is of more value. The assistant was very helpful but claimed I wasn't able to bring the product back for hygiene reasons.
I have returned unwanted in-ear headphones before without any issue and I was unaware about this policy when I bought them though it does stipulate on the receipt that products may be refused for exchange if the packaging has been opened. The assistant claimed that this is why the shop has a display to allow the customer to try them before they bought a pair. Surely this is a lot less hygienic than my solitary return of the product. Also the pair I bought was not available for me to try it out before I bought it.
I wondered whether any of you could help? I have been able to resolve some of the issues with the bass levels but overall I'd still rather purchase a different pair.
Thanks,
Phil

Unfortunately just because you don't like something you bought, in a shop, it doesn't mean the shop is legally obliged to change it.0
