Dell battery message

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, perhaps six or seven years old now.
When I turned it on tonight it said my battery wasn't charging and is getting old. I forget the exact wording.
Is it possible to buy a new battery and, if so, where from? Is it just a case of changing the lead or is it more involved?
You can guess from this, that I am not particularly into IT things.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

You can buy a replacement from less than £12, all the way up to £29 for an extended 9 Cell battery.0

DELL Part £44 (whether is is genuine as claimed, I don't know)
Typical generic extended battery £22
Typical standard generic £12
Lots in between.0 -
I have just had the same thing happen to me on an old Dell 1545 (I think that's what it is).
It wasn't the battery underneath the laptop that wasn't working properly it was the charging cable, in fact it was the bit that plugs into the side of the laptop that was slightly broken.
I tried another charging cable and the error message changed from not charging to charging.
I ordered a so called original Dell charger from Amazon for under £10 (you don't get the part with the 3 pin plug) and hilts I don't think it is a genuine Dell it does the job.0
