reading a gas meter

this may sound silly but I need to clarify how to read my gas meter, im going to work out my daily/monthly usage cost but need to know which number represents 1 unit .

so my new gas meter currently reads 99999.926 (926 being in red)

which is the one unit? is it the last digit 6 being a unit so if it goes to 99999.927 ive used one unit of gas?

or is the one unit the last 9 before the dot or the last black number 99999?

Thanks

    99999 is the figure you need.

    However, how this translates into money depends on whether you meter is metric or imperial.

  • its metric (m3).

    so when the 99999 becomes 00000 that's 1 unit been used? (its a new meter which is why its on (99999).

    (im basically clarifying that the numbers in red are not a unit)

    yes that sounds right.

    Every 1 unit is 11kwh for metric meters and 34kwh for meters measured in feet.

    You need to convert your gas usage to kWh as well to get meaningful figures, or calculate the cost. It's a fairly simple formula but does depend on whether you meter is imperial or metric. The formula may well be shown on your latest bill. The only variable element in it is the calorific value, or CV, of the gas. It doesn't vary much from bill to bill though.

    As posted, your actual use per meter unit depends on the type of meter you have.

    Check your meter to see if it's marked m3 for a METRIC model, in which case each meter unit is worth close to 11.2 chargeable Kwh - If it is marked ft3 it's an IMPERIAL meter and each meter unit is worth close to 31.5 Kwh

    0.1 = tenth of a unit,
    0.01= hundredth of a unit,
    0.001= thousandth of a unit.
  • its metric m3. So how do u calculate the cost, if 1 unit is say 4p, then is it not a simple case of unit times 4p plus the daily standing charge? I don't have a bill to check with so im asking here... But the kwh thing has confused me.

    this is why i was asking about the reading of meter and whether 1 unit on my meter equates to 1 unit as in 4p? hope im making sense...

    1 meter unit is 11.2 kWh (approx) (33 for an imperial meter). The 4p or 4.234p etc prices quoted are per kWh. So multiply 4p by 11.2. That's 44.8p.

    Call it 50p per metric meter unit or two units for a £1. (Plus the £4 or £6 or £18 per month standing charge.)

    thanks... I get it now! It no longer sounds cheap!
