Look into the cashback sites too, as you can generally get cashback from Quidco or Topcashback if you open a 123 current account (and more if you also open the 123 credit card)
signup cashback on the current account is now only available for switchers.

Not sure how you can conclude this - they're all marketed as current accounts and have full current account facilities, minimum funding requirements, etc, in the same way as the 123. While the 123 undoubtedly has some features that distinguish it from the others, I'm not sure they could accurately be described as making it more like a current account than a savings one?

I think I've drawn that type of conclusion from descriptions of how much could be put in, how often, to qualify for the 3% interest rate. The accounts I saw at two of the banks mentioned (there wasn't anything corresponding at the third bank) had monthly allowances for regular savings up to around £3600 a year (ie up to £300 a month). I went through the "bank accounts" screens in each case. It's possible i was looking at the wrong account, but it corressponded in every other way with the description I had been given.

NO MY MISTAKE - it's Barclays (which we would be leaving) which has a similar account but Savings ... the other Current acccounts mentioned (Lloyds for example) have lower interest ceilings on their interest-bearing accounts than we want. The Lloyds Classsic With Control has a ceiling of £5,000, and a £10 a month charge.

You wouldn't want a Lloyds Classic with Control. You would want the Classic with Vantage, which costs nothing. And as I have already mentioned, you can have 3 of them, and you can stash away £45K across Lloyds, BOS and TSB.

I'll not mention them again now in this thread.

OK thanks for your help and suggestions. The quote I looked at on their website included the Vantage option (with a table of interest rates - which I am guessing must be the same for the cost-free Classic) ... it still tops out at £5,000. I'll have a look at the others, at present the £20,000 top at Santander looks most suitable for our needs, but who knows what will happen in future?

some will disagree, but my experience has tied-in with their ratings. therefore, i use Santander for their rates, currently with a 123 account, but would not use them as my main current account provider.

    123 is a very good account to have...the £2 monthly fee is repaid easily by the Council / Gas / Electric & 4 mobile phone DDs that I have...and the 3.00% interest (1.00% / 2.00% up to £3k, then over £3k = 3.00%) is great too :D especially when it's a paltry 0.1 -0.5% elsewhere .
Runs very smoothly...online access is secure and has the back-up of emails and texts where you set in/out money limits and balance limits...that way you can keep total control!

I have seen a baffling DD appear on my list by LLOYDS BANK PLC - CARD SERVICE except I don't have a card with them! Do they manage other companies cards?

A problem is the terminology of the DDs don't stay the same when they transfer!

I might cancel it for the time being, hopefully that option doesn't erase the details for good.

I cancelled it to be on the safe side. Then 5 minutes later I realised the last four digits is the same as a Halifax Credit card I have just taken out. Yes and it erased everything rather than disabling it like the Natwest system does.

I suspect this explains why it says Lloyds card services on my Halifax card!
Lloyds Banking Group, which was formed by the merger of Lloyds TSB and HBOS has two banking licences
