Cat bringing up fur balls

Our new cat has been sick a couple of times in the past week, bringing back food he's just eaten along with a solid lump of compacted fur. One was about 5cm long and 2cm in diameter. Today's was smaller.
Does anybody have experience of this with their cat? Do the anti furball foods work?
Not sure how much more the carpets can take.

Hi Slinky
One of our cats is regularly sick (every couple of weeks if not more) with what we call "fur sausages" - they certainly aren't ball shaped.
He's a long haired part maine coon and pretty fluffy plus he keeps himself very clean - thankfully.
We feed him and our other cat, Iams hairball biscuits which we believe helps and the vets say everything is ok.
One thing I will recommend for cleaning your carpets is a poop-a-scooper with bags to pick it up and then Vax AAA carpet shampoo - we use it neat on our carpet with a j-cloth and it comes up amazingly well. Only use it on the spot where the sick was and it's never left a stain.
If only we could find something to stop him scratching the carpets.....hey ho, the joys of cat ownership - I wouldn't swap them for the world!
Hope this helps.

My maine coon gets quite a lot of hairballs. I buy the Johnsons hairball paste so although it doesnt stop it, it helps him bring it up easier. I'm not sure about the anti-hairball products, as I've never tried them, but I find that brushing him regularly helps reduce the hairballs, although he hates being brushed!0

Wierd thing is, he's actually a short haired cat, shorter than my previous one who never had these issues. I've been grooming him quite regularly since we got him. The sausages description fits what he brought up last week.Make £2026 in 2026

One of ours does it every couple of weeks, he is short haired too, we have no problems with the other one. We don't give him any special hair ball food (as he only eats wet), we do have some furball paste but he's not too keen on it and he won't let us groom him. He mostly does it in the kitchen which is tiled, unfortunately it is normally during the night so I usually end up standing in it first thing the next day. The couple of times he has done it on carpet (ususally our bedroom) I've used this http://www.rugdoctor.co.uk/cleaning-solutions/professional-products/spot-and-stain-remover. I got it from The Range if I remember correctly and it's brilliant. I haven't found a stain it won't shift yet.0
