Thanks again everyone. A couple of things here...I'm taking advice apart from the union, this monday, first day I can. I have a few names, and some give free advice, so that's that bit. As for a new career, well to be honest I've wanted that for a while, and as has been said, sometimes these things fall into place. I'm setting up a travel business, or maybe two! Little things so far, but maybe being released from the need to go to work will enable me to push on. (I bloody hope so, we need the money!).
I'll be upset if I do get barred from working with young people, but I'll live with that. All I did was my best. Stupidly, foolishly, but I know what I am and what I'm not, and so do my family.
I may have more news next week. I bumped into one of my workmates yesterday, and she told me she'd been hauled into the heads office over some facebook comments. Apparently it's not school related, it's some boy trouble (she's only in her 20'S!!) but I know that in the past she's put daft comments about school on her wall for all to see, and in work time. I'll take a closer look at this. Apparently she was presented with printouts of stuff she'd done...bit naughty that.

as an adult why did you feel a need or want to contact kids ?, you go to work come home and that's it (apart from your work you need to do with schooling). doesnt matter how old you are, as a teacher your in a position of trust and an adult, a student in school is a child

It's purely a matter of breaking safeguarding procedures

Pardon me if I missed this in the thread but were you briefed on safeguarding procedures prior to making this mistake?

Just an update in case anyone's still reading(!!) My doctoer signed me off for a month, and I'n going to see him again next week. At the same time, my occupational health counsellor (arranged by school!), has made me an appointment with the mental health nusrse. Now, here's the interesting bit. I informed both my union and employer of the dates of these appointments, and they arranged for my hearing to be rearranged for 10.00am on the 12th Nov.....and my last health appointment is at 9.00am the same day!! My union rep has demanded I write my resignation letter NOW, and email a copy to him asap. I've written back to both to point out there's no way I can make the disciplinary, and the nurse appointment took a lot of getting, but no reply as yet. Some 'arranging' going on here methinks?
On another point. I bumped into a girl from work a couple of nights ago, and it appears that shes been hauled into the office and 'bollocked' (her words) over some stuff she's put on facebook, with printouts to prove it. Now she's prone to putting daft status things up, often mentioning work -not by name though. . She couldn't stop to chat, and ive no reply in trying to contact her, but interesting....
  • Speak to the regional office or someone above the person dealing with you if you are not happy with his attitude or assitance.

And like i said before you have nothing to lose by fighting your corner all the way because from what others have said you will be tarred with the same brush if you quit or are fired. By fighting you have a chance to win, if you give up you are never going to win

Don't resign and tell your union that you will not be doing so.

If you resign at every interview you go to will be asked why? As soon as you say you were accused of grooming and resigned instead of being sacked you will be seen as guilty, and resigned to save your skin, it's human nature and the interviewer won't see past it, saying the union told you, you were nfa'd by the police etc won't make an ounce of difference.

Fight your corner with proper legal advice and tell the union to stop trying to force you to resign.

Either way, sacked or resigned, the stigma will be the same. Any prospect of deals being done are out the window in your position, you have nothing to lose by going down fighting.

I cannot see what right the Union rep has to "demand" that you do anything, particularly something so important and life-affecting as resign.
Communications like these (which can still be questioned and argued) can surely ONLY come from your employer.

A union rep. (supposedly acting on your behalf) who demands things like this would be setting off MAJOR alarm bells in my mind.

I would be seeking some contact with the rep.'s line manager on this, as well as asking that they stop making these sorts of demands and unhelpful statements (which cannot be helping your current health condition). Perhaps the MHN could help you in asking him to be more reasonable?

As others have said, if you have done nothing unlawful or inappropriate beyond basic foolishness (which affects us all at times), the worst thing you could do at this point, I feel anyway, would be to resign.

    Best wishes to you.

I would suggest there is a world of difference between putting "daft" things on Facebook and sending private communications to vulnerable children.

OP the union rep is there to help you not demand things. Plus what someone else does on facebook has nothing to do with anything that is happening to you. You have admitted you spoke to pupils via facebook something you should never have done, you needed common sense and that is what seems to have deserted you at this time.

I do hope everything turns out ok for you.
