Debt Free In 8 Months - Need to Fix My Credit Rating!

Hello

I'm currently paying off some debts using StepChange. After about 6 years of payments, i'm down to my last 8 months (thank god!), this time next year i'll finally be debt free!

I was just wondering, once i make that last payment, how do i then go about improving my credit rating - which at the moment is understandably awful!

I've just got married, and will eventually want to be put on my husbands mortgage (we kept it in his name whilst i pay everything off) and get a joint account etc - is this something we'll be able to do eventually, are there steps i can take now or do i have to wait until that last payment is made? Or am I forever to be branded for struggling with debt when i was a lot younger?

Thanks!

  • Have you checked your credit reports?

You need to see what the status of your accounts is.

On a DMP, chances are a lot are defaulted. These drop of your file after 6 years from default date.

Soem creditors default late (to maximise the damage to your file) and some not at all.

Noddle is free to check, but probably also best check experian and equifax too. Go for the Statutory report £2 each.
