Technology now is that good your 80 year aunt can take the wedding photos on her iPad and they could be as good as any professional shots

That's a bit of a stretch - a professional photographer doesn't point a teensy interpolated sensor camera at live action then apply instagram filters... It is almost all about composition, arranging the groups, understanding and controlling the light, depth of field, colour balances, etc. Automated software on a tablet can make an amateur's photos look less rubbishy, but they do not even compare with a professional service.

Some do use things like this now, but if i prefer getting out my 35mm SLR where i can then get into the dark room and develop my own pics
  • The gap between pro and consumer cameras is certainly closing and particularly for a bland photo in perfect daylight. For anything more creative or in poor lighting situations you need the controls that dont come with cameraphones or iPads.

Likewise, when paying a professional you are not just hiring a camera and someone to press the button but should be getting a creative person who knows how to compose the photos and make you look your best/ interesting photos etc.

We had a fashion photographer do our wedding and it was a similar price as the OP but that was just for the wedding itself and 2 hours afterwards with images to be provided on disc and only a few specially processed (the rest have a standard job done on them). The reason ours was so cheap was because we'd been let down by another photographer and he was going to be at a lose end in London on the day anyway as he was flying out to somewhere tropical that night (thankfully we didnt want reception photos) for a bikini shoot (lucky guy).

10 weeks isnt that long to wait. At the prices he is charging this is clearly not his main line of business and so its being fitted around other things. To some degree if you pay peanuts the least you can expect is that it wont be as speedy.

I do agree with the others on making backups of the disc. Ours failed after about 18 months and we hadnt, thankfully our photographer being the professional he is had them all still and so sent another copy for free.

I doubt that. Unless your 80 year aunt is related to Mario Testino or David Bailey lol ;)

One possible way of getting the photos printed would be via an automatic photo printer of the sort you find in some branches of ASDA - you tap on the screen to load the images, tap to say they are your photos & then pay per photo printed. All 6x4 but one way to have an idea of what you've got.

+1 on rounding up as many of "your own" photos as you can and preparing an album or photobook from them. Don't let one photographer spoil a happy day - get all the others there to make it Brilliant!

£450 is cheap, but I wouldn't say inordinately. I'd say it was probably a hobby of his. We first asked a friend of a friend if he'd do our wedding (student photographer), and he said he'd do it for £250, but sans album.

We paid £750 for ours, highly professional, absolutely wonderful, brilliant reputation. We had several post-wedding meetings with them to talk about album layout and they chose what they thought were the best and we went through them all.

Totally agree with what people are saying about the discs. Don't let him ruin everything for you. Turn it into a bit of fun, get creative and make your own storybook. Do you have anyone that is a bit of a dab hand in photo editing, photoshop or the like? They could probably make the images look better than currently if you're unhappy.
