I find the users recommending a laptop over a desktop for a 9 year old frankly laughable, do I really need to spell out the possible problems ?

    Yangptang is spot on.

if you did, it might add something to the discussion, the fact you find the idea laughable, adds nothing

Well I have been repairing computers for many years and I would suggest food/drink contamination, popped keys and cracked screens through closing with a pen on the keyboard, snapped dvd trays, cracked screen mounts through pushing screen back too far through to good old dropping are all good reasons not to give a laptop to a 9 year old.

Not withstanding the above the benefits of having replaceable /interchangeable parts are obvious.

personally i think the op's first post where it was stated for light gaming like the sims being a good enough reason to go desktop instead of laptop, as that light gaming will more than likely progress to more demanding games in the not to distant future
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

For a 9 year old, I would recommend going for desktop instead of laptop. It is purely for supervision.
With a laptop, kid can take it to their room and do what so ever they like. And if you got a desktop in living room/ study, parents may find it easier to monitor what they doing...
