Removed broken gas fire - what material is this ?

Hi

Have removed (and had terminated by gas safe brother) a gas fire in the living room as will want to cover the space , it has left behind a gap , obviously , which has sort of skirts round the 4 sides , as per picture , i will have to remove these prior to filling the gap

My question is , lookijng at the pictures , anyone have any idea what material is contained there?

Cheers

Could be fire bricks judging by the colour of them .... the yellow bricks I presume you are on about ?

Might be vermiculite board ? who knows - doesn't look like it might be asbestos related but then again who knows ?

When removing them take all necessary precautions is what I am saying, ie seal the fireplace off if practical, wear a suitable PP3 respirator, gloves and disposable overalls. What ever comes out bag it up securely and then bag that as well.

    Hi mate

it`s the 4 `skirts` i am referring to , the surround which protudes from the face of the wall , in the pictures , they are about an inch wide and grey coloured inside , within the recess itself , where it`s yellow and dirty , i wasnt planning on doing anything but boarding uo , so wasnt concerned about that

Its just the bits needing to remove to make wall flush that concern me

It reminds me of fire retardant board I've seen before. What does it feel like?

assuming I've understood what you mean it looks like angle edging used to tidy the hole up and would be either glued or screwed to the board.

Ahhh the surround ! I'd probably go with fire board, that is hard stuff as it is a cement based product, depending on how old it is it may contain asbestos.

Now it has been painted so it is technically encapsulated and therefore safe..ish, perfectly safe to remove yourself providing you don't smash it up removing it.

As I said earlier treat it as if it were acm, strip it out without breaking it and you'll be fine.

Sorry , yeah , the surround ! , its just that the inside sections of the surround lengths is exposed to whatever its made of internally , if that makes sense , and thats the grey couloured stuff i can see , that are in the pictures , my assumption in any case is a hammer and chisel to kind of bit by bit prise away from the wall , like removing a skirting board

Not knowing what the grey stuff is inside the surround , is making me nervous though

yeah , thats right , its what the angled edging is made FROM that worries me as it looks like it will be a job of bashing it away from the wall
